Reaching for the stars: our college system

To create a family ethos at The James Hornsby School, we have developed a system of four small schools, known as colleges.

Named after NASA’s space missions – Apollo, Atlantis, Discovery and Endeavour – our colleges symbolise our ambitions of reaching for the stars, achieving what may once have seemed impossible.

Every student is placed in a college when they join our school, helping facilitate the transition from primary to secondary, and providing stability and consistency for pupils and parents throughout their time with us. Siblings are always placed in the same college. The system encourages cross-year friendship networks, and provides role models, mentoring, collaboration and support through the vertical tutor system.

The staff in each college – made up of a member of the senior leadership team, a Head of College, an Achievement Officer and eight form tutors – monitor, support and challenge their students to achieve excellence. From analysing assessment grades and demanding 100% attendance, to telephoning parents and dealing with students’ personal issues, the College Teams are the hub of The James Hornsby family.

Our tutor groups are organised in a vertical system, each featuring approximately five students from each year. Students from different age groups then support each other through peer coaching, collaborate in tutor projects, present in college assemblies and participate in student-led literacy and numeracy-focused programmes.

The James Hornsby School teaches us to challenge ourselves, set out to achieve our goals and not stop until we have.
