Maths
‘Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers - Shakuntala Devi’
Mathematics is a universal language that transcends all cultural boundaries. It is vital for helping us make sense of the world around us and provides us with the tools to understand society. At JHS we want pupils to develop a deep curiosity around the subject and build on the innate desire we all, as humans have, to solve problems and find connections.
Maths is everywhere we look and without learning to create structure, the world becomes chaotic. The fundamental power that maths has is to help us find patterns in the universe, develop relationships between seemingly unrelated elements and notice the generalities that occur around us. In addition to these wonderous skills, maths allows us to function in society, from telling the time to changing the channel on the TV. Our pupils will journey through the mathematical world learning not only skills for life, but how to apply these skills and become the thinkers and innovators of the future.
‘Nature is written in mathematical language’. Therefore, it is part of who we fundamentally are. The joy of solving a problem and making links is key to developing mathematical thinking. We aim to improve not only our pupil’s mathematical knowledge, but their thirst to solve problems and gain joy from the process. Mathematics at JHS is about knowledge, application and challenge. Knowing skills gives pupils the freedom to explore the world around them. Understanding gives the pupils the ability to apply these skills to form arguments and challenge their world. Developing challenge at all levels is something that we are passionate about and will help to create the best version of each one of our pupils.
With mathematics by their side, the possibilities and life chances of our pupils are endless.
