Admissions Policy
Moving to James Hornsby was the best decision I ever made. The teachers are so encouraging and fun to work with – which makes students eager to learn.
Megan, Year 10
Parents and carers should apply online using the Essex County Council Application for a Secondary School Place form. Students will normally be admitted at the age of eleven.
Priority of admissions will be given to siblings of children already at the school and children living in the school’s local area. The school’s capacity assessment indicates admission numbers of 210. All applications including mid-year applications, must be made in accordance with the co-ordinated admission scheme operated by the child’s home Local Authority.
Deadlines and proof of residence should be adhered to by applicants. Parents and Carers wishing their child to be considered for entry at James Hornsby School must name the school as one of their preferences on the form.
If applying for a place mid-year please download our form below. The Essex County Council link to information regarding mid-year admission can be found HERE.

School Admissions and In-Year availability September 2023
The school Published Admission Number (PAN) only applies to the usual point of entry in school – at The James Hornsby School, this would be for Year 7. For other year groups which are not the usual points of admission, it will be for the School to determine whether there are available spaces or whether admission beyond a particular level would cause prejudice to the provision of efficient education, causing problems in delivering appropriate educational provision for its existing pupils.
