As soon as students join the James Hornsby School, they start lessons that will prepare them for success in their GCSE options. We provide the students with a broad and balanced curriculum so that every child has an opportunity to explore their areas of interest and develop expertise. With the exception of the Core subjects, students will be taught in mixed ability sets. In Maths, students are set according to ability, whilst in English and Science, there are top sets followed by mixed ability sets.
We run a vertical tutoring system at James Hornsby, which means that students will be in form classes made up of members from each year group. This helps new students to settle in quickly, being able to ask questions of students who have been here for much longer than them.
The form tutor will be a daily contact for the children in their form groups. There is also a dedicated Achievement Officer for each college who is a non-teaching member of support staff. Students can speak to Achievement officers before or after school, or at break times. The Head of College and the Senior Link for the college also play key roles in the pastoral care of the students in their college.
